North Korea Offered Four Events

Juan Antonio Samaranch, president of the International Olympic Committee, said Wednesday that North Korea has been offered a chance to hold all or part of four events during the 1988 Olympic Games scheduled for Seoul, South Korea.

Samaranch, concluding two days of talks between the two Koreas, said North Korea has until June 30 to respond.

“If we haven’t got an agreement by then, I can’t see that we are going to get one,” he said.

According to the proposal, North Korea would have all of the table tennis and archery competition. Long-distance road cycling and one of the soccer qualifying rounds would also be held in the North.

The offer represents a compromise solution to Communist North Korea’s demand that it be named co-host of the Games. If the proposal is accepted, it may head off a boycott by the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries.
