54 Made Ill in Texas as Insecticide Vapors Escape

KERENS, Tex. — Vapors from chloropicrin, a liquid insecticide, escaped from a grain silo near this community Friday, forcing 54 people to seek treatment at a hospital for eye and skin irritation, authorities said. Chloropicrin causes symptoms like that of tear gas and can be fatal if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin, officials said.
