NOT OK CHORALE

The management of the Los Angeles Master Chorale Assn. has a lot of nerve using reviews from last month’s Carnegie Hall concert and Roger Wagner’s valedictory “Missa Solemnis” performance in April in their to entice subscribers for the Chorale’s next season (See Page 55).

Not only will there be a new music director--and hence, no doubt, a different “sound”--but that music director has decided to include in next year’s roster only about half of the singers chosen by Wagner for these and the other highly successful concerts in the 1985-86 season just ended.

I think everyone from Andre Previn (who, in an open letter after the Carnegie Hall performance said he’s never conducted “a better chorus anywhere in the world”) to the average ticket buyer should know this:

Whatever the nature and quality of next year’s Master Chorale, it will not be the same product it has been. To make use of the reviews of an essentially different chorus is, I believe, false advertising.
