A Different China
I read Carl Hoffman’s article May 11 on China and it annoyed me. During my two visits to China I never saw what Carl saw: “. . . the restaurant floors littered with bones, fat and any other pieces of food deemed inedible and spat out.”
The “absurd couple” who had just been married and handing out candy to everyone; to Carl they were absurd, to me they were happy and wanting to share their happiness.
It is funny, isn’t it? Two Americans, Carl and I, who went to China. Carl saw funny, dirty and absurd people, and who ignored him when he “yelled” for service, and I saw a nation of happy people who were beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
