AM radio station KSDO has received one of three Grand Awards at the International Radio Festival in New York. The award, given last Thursday, was for the station’s daylong examination of AIDS, aired Oct. 28. The six-hour commercial-free program was the first of its kind in the station’s history, according to senior correspondent George Riley, who produced the show.

The show interviewed more than 20 guests, including officials of the World Health Organization in Geneva and a local AIDS victim. A second AIDS Awareness Day followed last week.

According to Riley, the contest is the only “truly international” award for radio and drew 1,500 entries from 31 countries. The other Grand Award winners were BBC Radio of Scotland in the entertainment division and WOR-AM of New York in news.
