The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a policy statement outlining what are considered acceptable levels of risk to the public from the operation of commercial nuclear power plants. It says that the public should be “provided a level of protection from the consequences of nuclear power plant operation such that individuals bear no significant additional risk to life and health.” The document says that the number of cancer deaths that might result from reactor operations should not exceed 0.1% of cancer death risk from all other causes.
