Aspiring American model Terry Broome was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison Friday for fatally shooting an Italian playboy she confessed to killing while high on cocaine.

A panel of two judges and six jurors found the 28-year-old South Carolina woman guilty of voluntary homicide in the killing of Francesco D’Alessio, 40, son of one of Italy’s top horse-breeders, on June 26, 1984..

Addressing the court from her steel-barred defendant’s cage earlier Friday, the slight, chestnut-haired woman acknowledged her guilt.

“I am sorry about Francesco’s death. Unfortunately, however, I can’t do anything to make up for it,” she said. “I can only guarantee that I will try to change my life.”

Prosecutor Marco Maria Maiga asked Monday that Broome be convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison rather than the maximum life term.

Broome testified she did not intend to kill D’Alessio but took her boyfriend’s pistol to D’Alessio’s apartment to try to make him stop taunting her in public with the lie that she had taken part in an orgy.
