Campus Changes

Your editorial (June 17), “Big Changes on Campus,” is right on the mark. The community colleges are poised for a renaissance. At long last a comprehensive blueprint for the colleges’ mission and functions has been prepared. Implementation and support by the state are all that remain before this rebirth can realize its full potential. It is important, however, to recognize that the colleges are not waiting on the sidelines. Many significant changes have been and are already being made.

In Los Angeles pre-enrollment assessment of first-time students has been taking place for some time in order to ensure that students are directed to the appropriate level of collegiate work. Special assistance for the growing number of limited or non-English-speaking students through an ESL Institute is already in development. A “core” concept in curriculum development that will guarantee students the availability of courses and certify students’ status for career, degree or transfer purposes in a specified period of time is another innovative idea already in development.

These and other actions are designed to place our community colleges on a sound course aimed at meeting student demand within appropriate educational guidelines. We are making significant inroads toward achieving these goals. With a firm commitment by the state we can ensure the success of our efforts.
