DWP Budget Seeks 6% Water Bill Hike

A $2.37-billion Department of Water and Power budget that contains a proposed 6% increase in residential water bills was approved Thursday by the Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners.

The rate increase, if approved, would add about $1 to the average monthly bill of $14.92. The budget calls for no increase in the average electrical bill of nearly $30, department officials said.

The proposed increase must wind its way through bureaucratic hearings before it--or any part of it--appears on water bills. Although the commissioners did formally approve the overall budget, they must hold public hearings on the rate increase and forward the matter to the City Council for approval.

The first public hearings are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at Carpenters Hall in Van Nuys and Aug. 19 at the DWP general offices in downtown Los Angeles.
