EQUIPMENT--Board, $30-130; fins, $15-30; leash, $10-15.

WHERE TO GO--For recreational purposes, body boarding can be done at nearly any beach. A beach with a sandy bottom is easier on the feet. Beginners should avoid rip currents. Waves of 1-2 feet provide adequate surf for recreational purposes.

INSTRUCTION--Free clinics to be run by Morey Boogie boards: Aug. 2 in Oceanside, and Aug. 16 at Pacific Beach. Bodyboarding magazine publishes tips. In lieu of formal lessons, a few minutes of observation should suffice to help beginners learn enough to catch a wave.
