Officials appealed to a thief’s sense of patriotism Friday as they urged the return of 40 stolen silver medallions, which were to be given to the nation’s top athletes in a July Fourth weekend salute.

“We’re hoping that maybe this person has a heart or something,” said William Potter, vice president of National Standard Group, which minted the medallions. An unmarked cardboard box carrying the medallions was stolen Thursday from a messenger service van parked outside the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

Among the athletes who were to receive the medallions are Bobby Orr, Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, Peggy Fleming and Billie Jean King. The medallions were to be presented at the July 6 Sports Salute to the Statue of Liberty at Brendan Byrne Arena in New Jersey.
