The Liberian government, responding to opposition calls for new elections, has warned that it will maintain law and order at all costs.

The government of President Samuel K. Doe said in a statement read on radio and television Thursday that it would take all appropriate measures against those “who might contemplate or initiate violence” in this West African country.

In recent days, a coalition of opposition parties that were defeated by Doe’s National Democratic Party of Liberia in the October, 1985, elections renewed their call for new elections under international supervision.
