The Helena, the 38th fast-attack submarine authorized by Congress, was launched at Groton, Conn., as about 100 protesters staged a peaceful “die-in” by lying behind police barricades to represent past and future nuclear victims. Demonstrators staged a three-hour vigil outside the Electric Boat shipyard on the Thames River before the launching ceremony for the latest addition to the Navy’s nuclear fleet.
