Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in London in support of economic sanctions by Britain and other European nations to pressure South Africa’s white leaders to end apartheid. The protesters listened to speeches in Hyde Park, then marched to Clapham Commons, about four miles away, for a seven-hour rock concert to benefit the anti-apartheid campaign. Police estimated that 25,000 people took part in the rally. The Anti-Apartheid Movement, which organized the demonstration, put the number at 100,000.
