The Justice Department approved a merger.
The proposed merger of the long-distance telephone and data communications operations of GTE Corp. and United Telecommunications was announced Jan. 16 and has been awaiting government approval. The two companies agreed to form a partnership called US Sprint, consisting of their long-distance telephone units--GTE Sprint and US Telecom--and their data communications subsidiaries--GTE Telenet and US Telecom Data Communications.
