WEST BERLIN — The West German newspaper Bild reported Monday that at least six East Germans died in a gun battle with Communist guards in an underground railway tunnel last month while trying to flee East Berlin.
The newspaper, which gave no source for its report, said a group of 12 military reservists had planned to blow a hole in the tunnel wall and reach West Berlin. The paper said those who survived the May 7 gun battle were captured and summarily executed by firing squad.
