Dow Breaks 1,900 and Stays There

NEW YORK — The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials climbed above the 1,900 mark today and stayed there for the first time as the stock market maintained its record-setting momentum.
Late buying boosted the blue chips to bring the Dow up 10.82 to close at 1,903.54. The volume was 147.67 million shares compared to 135.13 million shares Monday.
Hopes that falling interest rates will eventually bring better business conditions and improvements in corporate profits have whetted investors’ appetites for stocks.
The chances of lower rates have grown on account of the economy’s persistent weakness, many analysts contend.
