Two American climbers were killed when an avalanche struck them at the 20,000-foot level on 28,253-foot K-2, the world’s second-highest mountain, in northeastern Pakistan. Other members of the nine-member party identified the dead as John Smolich, 35, leader of the party, and Alan Pennington, 34, both of Portland, Ore. The accident happened June 21, but it took several days for other climbers to descend and relay word.
