A collision with a pleasure launch Thursday set back the Henley Royal Regatta challenge of Brown University’s rowers, who two years ago won the Ladies’ Challenge Plate in record time.

The accident, which occured 100 meters past the finish line, sheared off a section of the bow.

“It could make quite a difference to us,” said stroke Scott Armstrong, one of two returnees from the 1984 crew. “We may have to switch boats now and have only half a day to get used to a different one. I don’t know if we can do that. Every boat has a different feel and it can affect your rhythm.”

Even more aggravating to the Brown crew was that the accident, which occured after an impressively comfortable victory over the English club Walton, was in no way its own fault.
