French Zap Use of English TV Term

The government has moved to head off another English invasion of the French language--the word zapping , which has come to refer to skipping TV commercials by switching channels by remote control.

The General Commission on Terminology, noting that the word was gaining favor in France, jumped in Friday to announce a made-in-France, government-approved term for zapping-- saute-chaine, or channel-jumping.
