One day during the 1984 Olympics, entrepreneur Ted Turner wondered why his Turner Broadcasting System couldn’t put together a similar sports competition in which the world’s top athletes would participate.

The results of that dream will unfold over the next two weeks via the Goodwill Games, taking place in Moscow and involving 3,500 athletes from more than 50 nations.

Many athletes from the ’84 Olympics will be competing, among them Terry Schroeder (on the cover), who was captain of the silver medal-winning U.S. water polo team.

Locally, KTLA Channel 5 will carry the games Monday-Friday from noon-3 p.m., 7-10 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Weekend telecasts start at 9 a.m.

And of course Turner’s WTBS station, seen on many cable systems, also will be showing the games. See Watchables on opposite page for a rundown of daily events.
