A Polish immigrant burned himself to death in front of the Soviet consulate in Hamburg, West Germany, police said. They said the victim, identified as Marek Kucal, 26, who came to West Germany on Feb. 5 from the Polish city of Szczecin, doused himself with a flammable liquid in front of the consulate and set fire to his clothing. Consulate employees called the fire department and police, but Kucal could not be saved, a police spokesman said. Police said they did not know why Kucal killed himself.
