Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto said that nationwide anti-government protests have been a major success despite an apparent poor turnout and added that she will soon unveil new plans to oust Gen. Zia ul-Haq as president. Bhutto, leader of the Pakistan People’s Party, told a news conference that the party fielded hundreds of thousands of supporters in “Black Day” protests across the country Saturday. However, news reports said only 20,000 gathered in Karachi, the largest city, and about 50,000 in Lahore. Bhutto said the demonstrations took Pakistan a step closer to meeting opposition demands for Zia’s removal by autumn. The protests marked the ninth anniversary of the July 5, 1977, military coup that brought Zia to power.
