Pope John Paul II today made a final appeal to Colombian rebels to halt their guerrilla warfare and ended a seven-day visit marred by two blackouts, one intentional.

The Pope pleaded for reconciliation and peace in a final address to 50,000 people before stopping on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia on his flight back to Rome. This morning, the lights went out for 15 seconds as John Paul visited the Barranquilla Cathedral. There was no immediate explanation for the blackout. But rebels claimed responsibility for a blackout Sunday night that darkened the Pope’s stage in Cartagena for 10 minutes.
