Thomas A. Hughes, a 20-year FBI veteran, has become special agent in charge of the San Diego office.

Hughes, 43, was appointed to the post by FBI Director William H. Webster and supervises all FBI operations in San Diego and Imperial counties. He replaced Special Agent Gary Penrith, who has returned to FBI headquarters in Washington as deputy assistant director of intelligence.

Hughes has previously worked in FBI offices in Birmingham, Ala.; Pittsburgh, and Jacksonville, Fla. Hughes has been the FBI’s chief financial officer in Washington for the past four years.

He has a bachelor of science degree from Quincy College in Quincy, Ill., and a master of business administration degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. Hughes is a certified public accountant.

He is married and has four children. His father, Oscar M. Hughes, retired from the FBI in 1965 after 26 years of service.
