Mother Nature played a cruel joke on a Polish sailboat that fought stormy seas and windless skies to arrive in New York for the Liberty Weekend festivities just as the rest of Operation Sail was going home, crew members said today.

“We hoped we would make it,” said Tomasz Mastowski, a crew member of the 37-foot-ketch Stomil, which arrived four days late for the maritime parade honoring the Statue of Liberty’s 100th birthday.

The bedraggled boat, which was expected to take part in the spectacular July Fourth Operation Sail on Friday, finally slipped past Lady Liberty at sunrise Tuesday.

“The sun was so big over Brooklyn and we saw the statue,” said Mastowski, a student at a technical university in Lodz, Poland. “It was a nice view.”
