RICHMOND, Va. — A federal appeals court Wednesday upheld the espionage conviction of retired Navy officer Arthur J. Walker for helping his brother sell defense secrets to the Soviet Union.
Walker, whose brother, John A. Walker Jr., pleaded guilty in October to espionage, was convicted in Norfolk in August on seven charges, including two of espionage and one of conspiracy to commit espionage.
He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge J. Calvitt Clarke Jr., who conducted the trial without a jury, to the maximum three life terms plus 40 years.
