A Canadian environmental coalition is launching an advertising campaign urging U.S. visitors to press for a law to reduce acid rain.

The Canadian Coalition on Acid Rain said Tuesday that it will ask Ontario radio stations to broadcast the tough-talking messages, which accuse the American government of “pussyfooting around” on the issue and urge Americans to “get mad about acid rain.”

Canada claims that the United States is the source of half its acid rain overall and up to 75% in some parts of Ontario province, according to Adele Hurley, executive coordinator for the environmental coalition. The group claims that 48,000 lakes in Ontario are within 20 years of losing all life because of acid fallout.

A U.S. bill requiring polluters to cut emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide was approved May 20 by the House subcommittee on health and environment, but it is expected to encounter opposition in later hearings.
