A bomb exploded in the entrance of a state-run electric company office in central Venice, causing considerable damage but no casualties, authorities said late Friday.

Police said the bomb exploded at 2:15 a.m. when the narrow street was deserted. Emergency repairmen on a night shift at the electric company, ENEL, were in a back room and they immediately alerted police and firefighters.

The bomb, apparently set off with a time fuse, smashed the plate glass entrance to the offices, pitted the marble facing and shattered windows along the street near St. Mark’s square in the historic center of the city.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, which police suspected may be the work of protection racketeers.
