“Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1.” Ivo Pogorelich, piano. Claudio Abbado conducts the London Symphony. Deutsche Grammophon. DDD (digital recording). This young, brilliant, often eccentric Yugoslav pianist seems to approach every piece with a sense of discovery. Nonetheless, here is a rather standard reading of the piano concerto, a few nonconformist cadenzas notwithstanding. Which is not to say it isn’t breathtaking: The performance is charged with energy, enhanced by the virtuosity of all participants. Every note is given maximum attention by the DG engineers, without undue fussing.
