A judge today ordered 2,400 striking trash collectors back to work, ruling that health and safety was threatened by thousands of tons of garbage mounting on city streets, yards and lots.

Mayor W. Wilson Goode and his fire, police and streets commissioners testified this morning before Common Pleas Judge Edward J. Blake to seek the order, which the union has said it would obey. Earlier today, a mail carrier found a man’s body at one of the 15 emergency dumps set up during the strike. The man had been shot once under the chin, said police Lt. John Kelly.
