A heat wave suffocating the Southeast for nearly two weeks spread today to the Midwest, sending temperatures into the humid 90s.
Atlanta hit 99 degrees, and city officials began planning fines for violators of a new water ban to go into effect Monday. The heat spread east of the Mississippi River to Kansas City, Mo., and cities broiled. Chicago suffered in 93-degree heat, and it was 91 in Milwaukee and Minneapolis. Omaha sizzled under 92-degree temperatures.
