Suspected Tamil guerrillas attacked the town of Kantalai in northeastern Sri Lanka, killing 10 civilians. The government said the attack was in retaliation for the earlier slaying of 39 Tamils in the same region that some witnesses said was carried out by army troops, an official source said in Colombo, the nation’s capital. In another development, a Tamil rebel group with exile headquarters in Madras, India, said that 10 Tamils were killed and 12 injured when a Sri Lankan military helicopter bombed a bus 170 miles northeast of Colombo.
