PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia — Hana Mandlikova, the world’s third-ranked woman tennis player, took a break from training today to marry a longtime admirer in a brief ceremony at Prague’s old town hall.
The marriage of Mandlikova, 24, and Jan Sedlak surprised everybody. “They suddenly decided to do it,” said the bride’s father, Vilem Mandlik, who said he learned of their plans Thursday.
Sedlak left Czechoslovakia at age 15 in 1968 to live with his mother in Australia and now resides in the Netherlands, where Mandlikova trains with Betty Stove, the former Dutch star.
Sedlak had been an admirer of Mandlikova for eight years and frequently followed her on the women’s tennis circuit.
After the ceremony, Mandlikova skipped the wedding banquet in order to practice.
