Two Communist spies smuggling microfilm containing information about the U.S. Army were caught by West German agents because of an East German ban on American newspapers, a police official said Friday.

Franz Raischutis, 51, and his wife, Ute, 32, were caught July 15 because they hid microfilm mailed to East Germany in a package containing clothing wrapped in a U.S. Army weekly newspaper, Ernst Nisius, a senior official in the Interior Ministry of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, said.

East German customs officials sent the package back to West Germany because American newspapers may not be shipped into East Germany. The microfilm was discovered after the package, which contained no return address, was auctioned by West German postal authorities.
