Question: I would like to replace the lattice work that skirts my back porch. However, I do not think I have the expertise to do so.

Answer: There is a pre-manufactured PVC lattice material available in several different sizes and colors. All you need to do is saw it to the correct size and nail it. The plastic can be cut by hand or power saw and nailed without pre-drilling. It does not need to be painted, and dirt splattered from rain or dripping gutters can be washed off easily.

Q: Are federal home loan mortgages available for second mortgages?

A: Effective last January, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. (Freddie Mac) began purchasing second mortgages from approved lenders. Persons who take out second mortgages under this program have no restrictions on the use of money; they may use it for other purposes than home improvements or to purchase second homes.

The program replaces the old home-improvement loan program of small-scale lending, which was limited to home improvement and home repairs.

The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. expects to buy over $1 billion of loans during 1986. Lenders may make loans up to $67,000, depending upon the equity on the first mortgage. Maturities will remain from five to 10 years. This fixed-term second mortgage makes it much more attractive than ordinary home equity programs that are often based on variable interest loans.
