U.S. Will Postpone Decision on Support for Loans to Chile
The Reagan Administration will withhold for the moment a decision on whether to support future international loans to Chile, Elliott Abrams, assistant secretary of state for inter-American affairs, said today.
He told a House Banking subcommittee that loan vote decisions on funds for Chile from the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank will depend on whether the government of Gen. Augusto Pinochet improves human rights and moves toward democracy.
“It is apparent that our loan vote decisions will largely be driven by how we see the human rights situation in Chile,” Abrams said.
Chile has $887 million in loans pending from international lending institutions, including the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank.
