Chalice Discovery Is Finder’s Keepers
A 1,200-year-old chalice valued at up to $11 million should be returned to the man who found it in a bog six years ago, the Irish High Court ruled Tuesday.
The chalice, described by experts as one of the most significant discoveries of early Christian art, was found at Derrynaflan, County Tipperary, in 1980 by local businessman Michael Webb and his 16-year-old son using metal detectors.
After sending it to the National Museum, the Webbs were offered a reward of $14,000, which they refused. They then began a five-year court battle for the return of the chalice.
