Saudi Arabia, a conservative monarchy, said it will provide more than $50 million in aid to the Marxist government of South Yemen. Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed Aba Khayl said the package of credits, development projects and commodity assistance resulted from a visit last week by Haider abu Bakr Attas, who became president of South Yemen after a bloody January power struggle in the country on the Arabian Peninsula’s southwestern tip. The aid and credit package will finance port expansion, hospital equipment, housing, ambulances, firefighting equipment and wheat.
