A handful of trash haulers picked up garbage Thursday as negotiations continued in a 16-day strike by 7,000 city workers that has stopped buses and trash pickups.

Teamsters leaders said hundreds of members of their union crossed picket lines and returned to work Thursday. But officers of the striking American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees said far fewer Teamsters worked.

About 14 of the city’s 600 trash haulers began collecting garbage from homes Thursday, said Robert Berg, press secretary for Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young.

The garbage haulers were among 500 to 600 Teamsters who crossed picket lines and returned to city jobs Thursday, said Joe Valenti, president of the 1,700-member Teamsters Local 214.
