Kasparov Wins, Leads in Match

Champion Gary Kasparov scored his first victory Tuesday in the world chess championship in London. Challenger Anatoly Karpov resigned the fourth game of the match, which had been adjourned Monday evening, shortly before play was due to resume on Tuesday.

Kasparov now leads, 2 1/2 to 1 1/2, in the match. Six wins or 12 1/2 points are needed for victory.

The game began with the Nimzo-Indian Defense but soon transposed to a variation of the English Opening. With his ninth move, Kasparov accepted pawn weaknesses on the Queenside. His judgment was vindicated by his excellent move 15 Nb3, which dissolved the weaknesses and left Kasparov with a more effective bishop against a knight.

Karpov’s defense was complicated by time pressure. After Move 30, he had only 15 minutes to reach the time control at Move 40.

Karpov resigned without seeing Kasparov’s sealed move of 41 a6.

Former challenger Viktor Korchnoi, who defected from the Soviet Union in 1976 and now lives in Switzerland, was one of the journalists at the scene. Korchnoi took the opportunity to accuse the Soviet Union of calling up two of Kasparov’s assistants for military training just before the start of the world championship. He also protested the World Chess Federation’s decision to hold the next Chess Olympiad in Dubai, which means that a team representing Israel cannot attend.

The fifth game is scheduled for today. Neither player has yet used one of his three allotted postponements.
