Hannah’s Holdout Continues; Trade Possible

Share

The Charley Hannah watch ran into its 14th day Wednesday, with the Raiders’ starting left guard at home in Tampa, Fla., planning to go to realtor school.

His agent, Howard Slusher, says the Raiders aren’t even really watching.

“I really have no idea where we are,” Slusher said from his Palos Verdes office. “There’s not (that much) difference between the parties if they’re really trying to sign him.

“I’ve sent in four different written proposals and I’ve never received a postcard back. This is not typical Raider behavior. I’ve dealt with enough of their players (Marc Wilson, Mike Haynes, Matt Millen, Don Mosebar) to have a sense of what they’re doing.

“They may be trying to make a trade. The Cincinnati Bengals have a tackle, Mike Wilson, who’s been rumored going to an AFC Western Division club. Whether it’s the Raiders or not, I don’t know.”

Slusher has had battles with other teams but enjoys something like a normal relationship with Al Davis. A year ago, Slusher held linebacker Bob Nelson out for a few days, reportedly asking for a raise from $180,000 to $300,000. The Raiders started at $235,000, and Nelson signed for $245,000.

“Last year, I knew what their offer was,” Slusher said. “They had a specific number. We made a great compromise and they made a small compromise. That’s part of the game.”

Hannah is said to be asking about $400,000 and to have been offered about $300,000.

Hannah, 31, was among the most consistent Raider linemen last season. He has been replaced so far this season at left guard by Curt Marsh, who had been slated to take over right guard for the veteran Mickey Marvin. Marvin has been moved back into the lineup.
