The World : N. Ireland Rioting Erupts

Share

Widespread rioting broke out in Roman Catholic areas of Northern Ireland on the 15th anniversary of Britain’s introduction of internment of terrorist suspects without trial, a policy that was abandoned in 1975 following worldwide condemnation. In Belfast, Londonderry and Downpatrick, rioters hurled more than 100 firebombs at security forces, who responded by firing about 140 rounds of plastic bullets, police said. At least 13 security force members were injured and about 60 people were arrested.
