Barberry Spur Goes Wire-to-Wire to Win Adios Pace

Favored Barberry Spur, driven by Richard Stillings, led the entire way and won by a length in the final race of the $233,450 Adios Pace at The Meadows harness track Saturday.

Barberry Spur, the prohibitive favorite, won in 1:53.1, a career mark, to edge second-place Tylers Mark and third-place Cash Asset for a purse of $93,380.

In the first division preliminary, Barberry Spur was first; Ogden Lobell, driven by William O’Donnell, was second; Masquerade, driven by Richard Silverman, was third, and Audubon Hanover, driven by Tom Haughton, was fourth.

In the second division, Tylers Mark, driven by John Campbell, was first; Cash Asset, driven by Tom Haughton, was second; Heads Up Handsome, driven by Dean Zaimes, was third, and Uncut Jade, driven by Richard Stillings, was fourth.

The top four horses in each preliminary race went to the final.

Barberry Spur boosted his career earnings to $1,310,339 in winning his fourth race in a row and seventh of 13 starts this year, including the Cane Pace at Yonkers, the first leg of the pacing Triple Crown.

Barberry Spur, the 2-year-old colt of the year in 1985, won $971,147 last year.
