There are no major obstacles to closer ties between Tehran and Moscow, a senior Iranian official said. Mohammed Javad Larijani, deputy foreign minister for economic and international affairs, said Iran views ties with the Soviet Union as “a long-term relationship, requiring a solid and extensive base.” Iran-Soviet relations have improved since Tehran cracked down on Iran’s Tudeh (Communist) Party and expelled 18 Soviet diplomats in 1983. Larijani said the two countries are discussing the resumption of Iranian sales of natural gas to the Soviets and exports to Europe through a Soviet-built pipeline.
