Jailed Solidarity leader Adam Michnik was freed today under a government amnesty, the second major figure released in recent weeks, dissident sources said.

Michnik, 39, was freed after serving a little more than one year of a three-year term for “heading an illegal organization” and inciting a nationwide strike against food price increases. The release of Michnik follows the freeing of Bogdan Lis on July 31 under the limited amnesty for criminal and political prisoners declared earlier in July.
