N. Irish Marking End of 1689 Siege Hurl Rocks at Police
Police came under a barrage of stones today as thousands of Protestants marched through Londonderry to commemorate the end of the 15-week siege of the city by an invading Roman Catholic army in 1689.
In the city’s mainly Catholic Bogside district, police fired three rounds of plastic bullets to disperse rioters throwing gasoline bombs before the parade started. Police said no injuries were reported.
The annual Apprentice Boys’ March followed a night of violence in which two police stations were bombed and six people, including an American visitor, were injured.
The annual parade in the province’s second-largest city is traditionally accompanied by an outpouring of pro-British Protestant fervor.
