Michigan Bell Telephone Co. employees walked off their jobs after contract talks broke off, bringing to 52,000 the number of phone workers on strike nationwide. Dave Kohler, spokesman for the Communications Workers of America, said 12,600 members left work when an agreement extending the old contract expired. He said pickets at Michigan Bell sites would be set up immediately. Meanwhile, in New York, a strike involving 40,000 workers entered its third day.
