The Senate passed and sent to President Reagan for his signature legislation banning the importation and manufacture of “cop-killer bullets,” which can penetrate bullet-resistant vests worn by police officers. But the bill exempts those armor-piercing bullets made for rifles and legitimate sporting purposes. Passed by voice vote, the measure defines the banned ammunition as bullets made of iron, beryllium copper or depleted uranium. Standard bullets are made of lead.
