Dutchman Adrie Van der Poel broke away with three riders in the final lap of the Colorado National Monument road race Friday and held off Greg LeMond and Frenchman Bernard Hinault to win the 83-mile first Colorado stage of the Coors International bicycle race.

The overall leader’s jersey went to Jeff Pierce, who said: “I don’t anticipate holding it all the way to the end, not with LeMond and Hinault and lots of other guys only 19 seconds behind.”

Marianne Berglund of Sweden outsprinted Jeannie Longo of France and Marie Canins of Italy to win the 45-mile women’s race, but Longo took the leader’s jersey with a better finish--second--in the morning’s first women’s stage, a 3.7-mile time trial.
